Chuka Wakame seaweed salad, a healthy salad that you can’t miss.

There are many different species of seaweed

With its own unique characteristics, uses, and growing environments. They are generally divided into three main groups based on their pigmentation: brown, red, and green.

Brown seaweed (Phaeophyceae)

  • Kelp : is a large seaweed that can form underwater kelp forests, which are an important habitat for various marine life such as “Macrocystis pyrifera”.
  • Fucus : Also known as rockweed or bladderwrack, species such as “Fucus vesiculosus” are commonly found in intertidal zones.
  • Sargassum : A seaweed that is sometimes found floating in large quantities, especially in the Sargasso Sea.

Green seaweed (Chlorophyta)

  • Sea Lettuce : Sea lettuce is a type of seaweed, scientifically named “Ulvalactuca”. It looks like lettuce leaves and is often used in salads or soups.
  • Caulerpa : A type of seaweed. That comes in various shapes and sizes. Some, such as “Caulerpa lentillifera,” are popular in Asian cuisine and are also known as sea grapes or green caviar.
  • Enteromorpha : These are green, tubular seaweeds that can be found in various marine environments.

Taste

Shukawakame or seaweed salad has a unique flavor that combines the original flavor of wakame seaweed and the various seasonings used in cooking.

  • Mildly salty : The main ingredient is wakame seaweed, and it has a delicate salty flavor reminiscent of the ocean. It doesn’t taste too “fishy”, but rather a refreshing ocean flavor.
  • Slightly Sweet : The dressing used in Chuka Wakame often contains a sweetener. Which can be sugar or mirin (sweet rice wine). Which gives it a slight sweetness that helps balance out the other flavors.
  • Sour taste : Vinegar is also a common ingredient in salad dressings, which gives salads a sour taste.
  • Umami : Soy sauce. Which provides saltiness and umami flavor, is another key ingredient in many shuka wakame dressings.
  • Sesame Oil : Toasted sesame oil and sometimes sesame seeds are add to the salad. Which gives it a crunch and a rich flavor.
